Alberta Innovates (AI) is a provincially-funded Corporation with a mandate to deliver solutions for the most compelling priorities facing this province – economic diversification, environmental performance and social well-being. We do this by building on provincial strengths in health, environment, energy, food and fibre and by leveraging digital platforms such as artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, and omics. Together with government, entrepreneurs, industry, innovators and research partners, we are collaborating to solve some of the world’s biggest challenges.

The AI enterprise employs 600 people in 10 locations and encompasses two subsidiaries, InnoTech Alberta and C-FER Technologies, as well as 72 funded programs.

The Marketing and Communications team provides a variety of communication and marketing services to create awareness and understanding of AI, build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, and to promote the overall image and reputation of the organization.

We are seeking a Director, Brand Marketing to join our team. Reporting to the Vice President, Marketing and Communications, the successful candidate will be responsible for marketing strategy and budgets, daily operations, team leadership as well as development and execution of high-impact strategic and operational initiatives, events, and projects. The successful incumbent will be responsible for, but not limited to, achieving the following:

  • Ensure that Alberta Innovates has an effective marketing communication strategy to achieve both long term business objectives and short-to-mid-term integration and stakeholder engagement goals
  • Maximize awareness of Alberta Innovates brand value proposition in domestic and global markets
  • Devise marketing communications strategies and campaigns that inform and support effective development of innovation and research programs, projects and funding guidelines
  • Oversee ongoing qualitative and quantitative market research, insight and intelligence gathering, including customer journey mapping and channel analysis
  • Deepen enterprise understanding of the diversity of clients served and their requirements
  • Drive development and use of the customer relationship management (CRM) system to enable and ease engagement with stakeholders of the innovation ecosystem
  • Drive the development of integrated marketing communications materials and messages to build brand clarity for Alberta Innovates in local, national and international markets
  • Work with enterprise partners to support and enable the integrated reporting of operational and ecosystem performance to Alberta Innovates stakeholders
  • Optimize use of direct marketing and social media to cultivate an innovation community of mutual support
Qualifications

Required, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • University degree in business, public relations, marketing or similar field
  • Professional credential such as an APR, ABC, SCMP or CAAP is an asset
  • Ten or more years of multi-sector marketing/communications experience
  • Seven or more years of experience at a leadership level
  • Innovative, strategic thinker with understanding of marketing and its integration within various business strategies
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, execute and manage financials of short, medium and long-range brand marketing initiatives
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage projects including budgets
  • Strong relationship management skills that build effective networks of internal and external business contacts
  • Excellent communication, presentation, facilitation, negotiation, conflict resolution and interpersonal skills
  • Highly developed analytical and decision-making skills
  • Highly collaborative; resourceful, persuasive, customer focused, and is an effective advocate that delivers results
  • Challenges the status quo; takes an innovative approach to problem solving
  • Comfortable making and supporting difficult decisions
  • Mature, self-sufficient and self-motivate
  • An innovative and creative thinker who presents ideas effectively
  • Exhibits sound judgment when making complex decisions
