THE ORGANIZATION

In 1961, the Catholic Archdiocese of Edmonton recognized several needs in the community that were not being met by existing resources. ​With a directive from the Archdiocese to help those in the community who need it most, Catholic Social Services was established, and over 50 years later, it continues to offer compassion, support, and consolation in the community.  Starting with a small staff that offered only family and child services in Edmonton, the Agency has grown over the years to provide a variety of services throughout Central Alberta.  Working with an annual operating budget of $94 million, the Agency receives funding through government and public grants, with the remainder of the funds coming from donations and client revenue.  The Agency employs over 1800 individuals and is further served by more than 600 volunteers.

Catholic Social Services is the charitable service delivery arm of the Archdiocese of Edmonton and offers over 100 different programs. Examples include support for women leaving abusive relationships, helping homeless youth rebuild their lives, and enabling people with disabilities to live life to its fullest. Catholic Social Services also offers support for the settlement of immigrants and refugees, provides counselling that strengthens families and relationships, helps recovering addicts, and supports women facing crisis pregnancies.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Job Title: Director, Development & Community Relations

Reports to: Chief Administrative Officer

Direct Reports: 2 – Fund Development Manager, Communications and Events Manager

Indirect Reports: 7

Location: Edmonton, AB

 

MANDATE

The Director, Development & Community Relations is responsible for creative and strategically-driven communications in support of community and stakeholder relations for Catholic Social Services (the Agency) as well as fund development for the Sign of Hope Society.

The position leads all fund development and donor relations activities including initiatives to attract and retain donors, develop and enhance relationships with community partners and secure funding for our charitable programs. The Director also ensures the delivery of proactive, targeted communications that are relevant to our multiple community stakeholders as well as in support of the programs and services delivered by the Agency, ensuring alignment with our mission, core values, guiding principles and Catholic identity.

 

Key Accountabilities

The position will include the following responsibilities:

Development & Donor Relationships:

  • Oversee development activities to raise funds for the Sign of Hope Society.  This includes building new and nurturing existing donor relationships, solicitation of major gifts, planned giving and grants, as well as securing increased corporate and community support.

Community Relationships:

  • Build and deliver strategies that support cultivation and enhancement of meaningful relationships with individuals, parishes, private sector corporations, funders and government ministries, schools, industry partners, as well as the public and other stakeholders in the communities we serve.

Agency Communications:

  • Build and deliver integrated, strategic communication plans that inform and celebrate our work in community, promote and enhance the Agency and Sign of Hope brands, educate and advise people in need of our services, as well as engage support for our charitable operations;
  • Ensure that our communications practices effectively strengthen our overall fundraising results as well as increase the visibility of our programs throughout the communities in which we serve; and
  • Oversee all electronic and print communications, including robust and proactive social media strategies.

Media and Public Relations:

  • Identify and prioritize media opportunities, handle crisis and issue responses, oversee preparation of speeches, presentations and other supporting material as needed; and
  • Serve as the lead point person on media interactions, and Agency spokesperson as requested by the CEO.

Events:

  • Oversee the planning and execution of agency events, including fundraising, stakeholder appreciation, and community gatherings; and
  • Ensure that events are aligned with our mission, and that they support the delivery of programs and services to vulnerable people in our communities as well as the sustainability of our charitable fund raising.

Performance Measurement & Reporting:

  • Deliver on the achievement of outcomes by utilizing data/data analytics, donor focused innovation, external best practices, and creative media strategy/execution.

Leadership of Community Relations and Development Team:

  • Promote an employee culture of servant leadership, results orientation, high performance, accountability and continuous improvement;
  • Ensure team members model our core values and are aligned with our mission; and
  • Establish staff goals, priorities and objectives, ensuring achievement of results, as well as employee development and growth.

 

FIRST YEAR DELIVERABLES / MEASURES OF SUCCESS

Success in the first year will be determined by the candidate’s ability to:

  • Learn the strategic, operational, and contextual scope and nuances of the agency, our work, our stakeholders and our charitable fund raising activities;
  • Establish improved and comprehensive fund development and communications strategies that identify key performance indicators regarding fundraising targets, donor attraction/retention/recognition, public/government relations, agency communications, community awareness and support for the work of the agency; and
  • Develop and lead a high performing team.
Qualifications

CANDIDATE PROFILE

The successful candidate will have the following:

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, public relations, journalism, or equivalent;
  • Master of Business Administration is desirable;
  • Certified Fund-Raising Executive (CFRE) designation is desirable; and
  • Professional membership and designation with the Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS) and/or the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) is an asset.

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years senior management level experience in leading fund development or corporate communications teams;
  • Demonstrated track record of major gift level fundraising;
  • Demonstrated experience growing and maintaining donor bases;
  • Proven success working within a large and complex environment with a broad range of donors, clients and/or stakeholders; and
  • Previous work in the not for profit sector is preferred.

  • Ability to utilize available information, interpret emerging trends, transfer knowledge to colleagues, and implement actions supported by data and analytics;
  • A confident decision maker, taking action supported by logic, and fact or documented conclusions and opinions;
  • Knowledgeable of best practices and performance metrics related to fundraising, communications, and donor relations;
  • Proficient with CRM systems and related technology utilized in managing fund development and communications activities and outcomes;
  • Models servant leadership and an outstanding work ethic, inspired by a passion to serve others;
  • Values ethical behavior, authenticity, and accountability;
  • Possesses the highest standards of personal and professional integrity;
