Job Description

The City of Greater Sudbury seeks a dynamic communications professional to join its Executive Leadership Team to drive the strategy and implementation of the corporation’s communications and community engagement efforts by leading the Communications and Community Engagement Division in the successful accomplishment of its Business Plan.
The communications landscape at the City of Greater Sudbury is varied, challenging and rewarding.  The city functions as the regional hub for Northeastern Ontario’s 550,000 residents and features well-developed health, education, tourism, retail and media sectors. Greater Sudbury is located within the traditional territory of the Anishnabek peoples and has one of the largest Francophone communities outside Quebec.  The municipality covers a very large land area – about 2/3 the size of Prince Edward Island – with a strongly urban core, some suburban communities and many smaller villages and rural areas. 
As Director of Communications, you will lead a strong internal team as the organization shifts from a reactive transactional model to a strategic orientation with a focus on building and maintaining our place and service-based brand.  You will take on responsibility for customer service, including 3-1-1, and citizen engagement and continue the implementation of solid strategies in order to achieve the goal of providing outstanding services to the people of Greater Sudbury.


You must have either a university degree in a related field with a minimum of eight years directly related experience or a college diploma in a related discipline with a minimum of ten years directly related experience, at a senior management level in large, unionized, and highly diversified public or private sector organizations.  You possess a superior knowledge of corporate communications, particularly in the local government area.  You have knowledge regarding intergovernmental relationships between the three levels of government, and the related non-governmental organizations and associations at the regional, provincial and national level.
This is a challenging and critical team leadership role.  Bring your diplomacy, negotiation, communication, team leadership skills and integrity to create a culture of service and effective communications both inside and outside city hall.
