Rocky View Schools (RVS) invites applications for the leadership position of Director of Communications. Duties will commence September 1, 2020, or as mutually agreed.

The Division

Bordering the City of Calgary to the north, west and east, RVS is Alberta’s fifth largest school division, serving the educational needs of over 25,000 students within 54 schools, located in the City of Airdrie, the Town of Cochrane, the City of Chestermere, and Rocky View County.

A rapidly growing school division, RVS employs more than 2,500 staff and its annual operating budget is approximately $275,000,000. RVS is in a strong financial position and known for its innovative culture. RVS’ Education Centre is located in Airdrie, one-half hour from downtown Calgary.

The Region

The Rocky View area encompasses some of the fastest growing communities in Canada. With a wide range of housing options available in both new and established neighbourhoods, people are discovering that the area offers a small town or rural lifestyle with big-city amenities. Parks, recreation facilities, and walking/biking trails abound in the area. The jurisdiction borders Calgary where many staff choose to live. The Role

The Director of Communications plans, directs, and executes a comprehensive communication plan for the jurisdiction focused on both internal and external audiences. The Director of Communications provides strategic advice and tactical communications support for various initiatives stemming from our Board of Trustees and/or senior executive team. The Candidate

RVS seeks a proven, collaborative leader with 10+ years of professional experience managing the communications efforts of a comparable organization, preferably a school division or public sector organization. The ideal candidate will be comfortable in taking a hands-on approach to the work within a small team and possess the ability to balance leadership skills with effective functioning in a team environment. The individual will be an innovative thinker, with a track record for translating strategic thinking into action plans and output that leads to defined results. They have built and maintained high functioning, multi-disciplinary, dynamic teams. They have demonstrated the ability to create and execute strategic communication plans with measurable objectives and results. They are committed to the organization, which is evident through their actions.
The successful candidate holds a Master’s degree or an advanced degree in the communications field, preferably with Strategic Communication Management Professional (SCMP) certification. Their experience includes developing materials to support advocacy efforts of an organization and working directly with senior leadership and governors.
The individual will be energetic, flexible, collaborative and proactive; a team leader who can positively and productively impact both strategic and tactical initiatives. They have demonstrated exceptional writing, editing and presentation skills with very strong attention to detail and the ability to craft a message that resonates with its intended audience in a clear, compelling and persuasive manner across a variety of mediums. They have experience leveraging emerging media channels and platforms to communicate with a variety of stakeholders. They have demonstrated abilities to deliver creative and innovative communications ideas and solutions.
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated skill and comfort in working with the media. They have a demonstrated ability to communicate complex subjects clearly. Experience in crisis communications and emergency response would be preferred.
The successful candidate will be a personable, approachable leader, who is a strong communicator with a good understanding and ability to lead initiatives in support of divisional goals. They have a proven track record of handling highly confidential and sensitive issues with skill, good judgment, tact and diplomacy while maintaining a high degree of ethical and professional behaviour. They are a disciplined self-starter, able to work independently and as a member of a team, to concurrently manage and drive results on a variety of projects simultaneously.
