Job Description

The Coordinator of Communications and Social Advocacy role holds accountabilities in four major areas: (a) Media Relations (b) Internal & External Communications (c) Event Management and (d) Social Advocacy.  Reporting to the Director of Public Relations and Community Engagement, this position’s focus is to protect and cultivate ACWS’ brand to ensure ACWS is a go-to source for media and government stakeholders, support the organization to reach its public awareness goals, manage public awareness and organizational events , and support the work to improve services to better meet the needs of abused women and their families.

Duties and responsibilities
 
The Coordinator of Communications and Social Advocacy supports public engagement, government relations, and other ACWS communications to accomplish ACWS vision, commitments, goals, and actions.  To do so, this position:

  • Identifies critical issues related to public and governmental relations that must be addressed in order to realize the vision and achieve the goals and objectives, and sets out strategies to address those issues.
  • Ensures all communication materials, including those of ACWS projects and initiatives, are aligned with the organization’s key messages
  • Documents key processes and workplans
  • Develops an annual operating plan for approval that sets out specific goals and strategies for each fiscal year
  • With senior leadership, ensures that there is a strategic communications plan in place for internal and external communications that supports the achievement of the strategic goals and ACWS objectives including ongoing sustainability of ACWS programs and projects.
  • Ensures the effective utilization of allocated resources
  • Maintains an exceptional standard of integrity and ethical leadership and assumes responsibility to ensure communications with our members, stakeholders and government promotes ACWS, our members and enhances our collective reputation.
  • Establishes and nurtures partnerships to further ACWS goals and reach ACWS public awareness and objectives.
  • Manages the ACWS website and ensures associated mailing lists are current and entered in accordance with ACWS processes and policies.

Qualifications
 
A Bachelor’s degree majoring in Communications, Public Relations, Political Science, or a related field. A combination of education and experience will be considered for applicants with a minimum of 5-10 years combined professional experience and education. 
 
The preferred candidate will:
  • Have experience with media communications
  • Have excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Manage multiple simultaneous projects effectively
  • Proven supervisory skills
  • Comfort addressing any issues directly
  • Have working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Social Media, and web-based platforms
  • Hold a valid Alberta Driver’s License
  • Be willing and able to travel throughout Alberta
