Job Description

The Alberta Teachers' Association, as the professional organization of teachers, promotes and advances public education, safeguards standards of professional practice and serves as the advocate for its members.
The Communications Officer, under the direction of the Associate Coordinator, Communications, is responsible for planning and implementing internal and external communications strategies designed to inform members and the public on developments and matters related to collective bargaining.  In addition, the position undertakes activities towards organizing and mobilizing members in support of bargaining objectives.  Specific responsibilities include:
  • Lead Association efforts to keep members informed and engaged in matters related to central table bargaining;
  • Produce news articles, web and social media content, and collateral for events, programs, services and publications as it relates to bargaining activities;
  • Research, write, edit and prepare for publication a variety of communication products such as news releases, talking points, briefings, brochures, pamphlets and resource kits;
  • Develop and implement campaigns to increase member engagement and prepare for mobilization in support of bargaining objectives;
  • Recruit, coordinate, and motivate volunteer teacher organizers to carry out grassroot organizing plans including phone banks, canvassing and event organizing.
  • Mobilize for Association-wide events and campaigns;
  • Planning, organizing and supporting the campaigns of Association nominees for elected office in the Canadian Teachers Federation; and
  • Develop, implement and evaluate communications materials and plans to support the promotion of Association products, services, initiatives and events.


  • Diploma in communications, public relations, journalism or a related field. Equivalent training in union, political or community organizing may be considered as an alternative.
  • Three to five years of experience in communications, public relations, journalism or union/political organizing.
  • Experience working with a labour or political organizations is an asset.
  • Experience developing content and/or writing articles for print and web-based publications and advertisements.
  • Experience with common social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube.
  • Experience with organizing and campaigning techniques, including the use of membership, data and outreach tools and technologies.
  • Excellent written communication and oral communications skills with the ability to engage and motivate peers and move people to act.
  • Ability to think critically and work under tight deadlines.
  • General knowledge of labour legislation including the Alberta Employment Standards Code and the Alberta Labour Relations Code.
  • Experience in labour relations including collective bargaining is an asset.
  • A valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License and access to a vehicle.  Scheduled travel throughout the province may be required including evenings and on weekends.

How To Apply

Salary: This position offers a competitive starting salary of $75,654 to a maximum of $97,333 plus a full range of employer-paid benefits.
Hours of Work: 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday.  Some evening and weekend work is required.
Work Location: Barnett House (11010 142 Street NW), Edmonton.
