We are seeking an energizing communications professional to join the External Relations team as a Communications Consultant.

Reporting to the Manager, Communications, the Communications Consultant provides a full range of communications services to internal client groups within the college, assists in the development of long and short-term strategies to raise the profile of Niagara College and implements internal and external communications plans to support projects, events, publications and media relations.

The incumbent builds and maintains relationships within his/her portfolio of internal college clients to support a proactive approach to College communications. The Communications Consultant also liaises with external partners and is responsible for coordinating the production of media materials generated from within his/her portfolio.

This position is responsible for executing tactics for the promotion of college initiatives through a variety of communication channels including print, digital, media relations and social networks. The incumbent will strategically leverage social media channels for college stories, earned media, and stakeholder engagement.

The incumbent, working with the Manager, Communications, will create, write and edit communication pieces (including gathering facts, planning and research). This includes submission to various sector publications as well as proactively pitching stories to the media. The position represents the college to the media, frequently acting as a first point of contact and spokesperson when required.

  • A minimum of a 3-year degree/diploma in Journalism, Public Relations or related field
  • A minimum of 5 years related experience in the not-for-profit sector; experience in post-secondary education and a large, complex organization an asset
  • Media relations experience
  • Experience in crisis communications and issues management
  • Demonstrated ability to write, edit and proofread at an advanced level in the English language with impeccable accuracy in grammar, spelling and content verification
  • Expertise in creating compelling communications pieces for a wide variety of audiences using multiple communication vehicles
  • Proficiency in writing full stories, converting written articles/media releases into various formats
  • Strong knowledge and familiarity with communication technologies and channels, including digital and social media
  • Photography and video skills an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with staff at all levels

The incumbent must be an experienced and creative writer with an ability to work independently and exercise good judgement while adhering to deadlines and managing multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment with constantly shifting priorities.
