Job Description

Durham College is seeking a part-time Junior Communications Specialist from May 2018 to May 2019. The incumbent will work 24 hours per week, at a rate of $25.00 per hour and will provide writing, editorial and support to its Communications and Marketing department and its various clients within the college. Reporting to and supporting the director, Communications, the successful candidate will be responsible for informing current and potential college clients, stakeholders and the community of important news about the college and projecting and fostering a high image of the college among these groups. This role is significant in supporting key projects from both an internal and external perspective. Responsibilities include: researching, monitoring and reporting media coverage; reactive media relations including interview co-ordination and arranging on-site coverage of campus events. The successful candidate will be responsible for the writing and copy editing of college marketing material including newsletters, print and radio ads, web and online content, and event communication. In addition, he or she will be responsible for supporting internal employee and student communication by writing and posting announcements, calendar events and college-wide messaging.
The successful candidate will possess: Minimum of a two or three-year diploma in journalism, communications, public relations or related field. A degree is considered an asset. Up to three years of communications experience with a strong emphasis on writing (experience in post-secondary education is helpful). Practical experience working with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. Superb command of the English language, strong understanding of editorial content and excellent grasp of Canadian Press (CP) style. Strong research, interviewing, fact-checking and proofreading skills. Ability to work well under pressure and with constant interruptions in a busy and high volume environment. Excellent customer service skills with a strong commitment to providing quality service. Adaptable, flexible and innovative problem-solving skills. Strong organizational and time management skills in planning, executing and completing tasks. Self-directed and motivated with both excellent written and communication skills. Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team. Ability to work professionally and effectively with people at all levels in and outside of the college.
