What can I expect to do in this role?

As Assistant Director, you will:

• Work closely with the Director in the development of strategic communications activities and branch initiatives and contribute to business, operational and financial planning;
• Provide expertise and strategic communications advice and support to the Deputy Minister of Cabinet Office Communications and other senior executives;
• Provide operational leadership to the branch, ensuring high quality advice and products, excellent client service, and the seamless integration of communications in activities across the organization;
• Oversee a team of communications managers responsible for developing communications advice, strategies and products for both internal and external audiences, as well as marketing, social and digital media, event planning, media relations, issues management and correspondence;
• Lead organizational change management and crisis communications;
• Develop effective business relationships with partners within and external to the ministry to support the planning, delivery, coordination and evaluation of communications products and supports.

Senior Leadership

• You have demonstrated experience leading, engaging and motivating a diverse team to deliver high quality results.
• You have proven change management skills and can foster an environment of high performance and continuous improvement.
• You have demonstrated experience in financial and human resources, including budget management, recruitment, employee learning and development, performance reviews, coaching and mentoring and employee relations matters.

Relationship Management and Issues Management

• You use effective communication, negotiation and conflict management skills to build credibility and consensus with colleagues, stakeholders and senior leaders.
• You have keen political acuity to manage complex, sensitive and high-profile media, social media and stakeholder engagement issues
• You have demonstrated experience using consultative techniques to build strong linkages with your partners.
• You have demonstrated experience anticipating and mitigating contentious issues and have effectively applied media and marketing analysis techniques to assess public reactions and media perceptions.
• Represent the Branch at senior level meetings and briefings with the Minister, Deputy Minister and their staff.

Knowledge

• You have in-depth knowledge and experience with contemporary communications theories, principles and practices.
You have in-depth understanding of evaluation tools and techniques to enhance and develop additional capacity to measure ROI of communications initiatives.
• You have a strong ability to develop integrated communications strategies and plans, including earned, paid, digital and social media.
• You have specialized knowledge and experience in communications planning, product development and management.
• You have experience in managing the development of sophisticated communications materials that are written in clear and concise language.
• You have proven project management skills to coordinate and monitor projects and initiatives.

Salary Range: $90,348 - $127,343 per year
