Job Description
Primary Focus

The Manager, Internal Communications leads a team of professional communicators in providing strategic counsel, sound communications expertise and high quality tactical execution related to internal communication. These activities contribute to the achievement of Enbridge's corporate strategic objectives, advancing the company's initiatives, enhancing corporate reputation and building employee engagement.

The position, which reports to the Director, Corporate & Business Communications is responsible for setting Enbridge’s overall internal communication strategy, as well as developing, improving and measuring internal approaches and tactics. The Manager, Internal Communications will develop strategic communication plans targeted at enterprise-wide internal communication objectives, and will provide direction, advice and guidance for business unit internal communication programs. The position will have overall responsibility for the brand and content management of elink (the company's intranet), the company's internal magazine Link and other approaches and tactics targeting internal audiences.


Internal communications

Provide strategic internal communications counsel, planning and implementation to corporate and enterprise-wide clients. This includes developing plans for some corporate executive and senior management, as well as organizing employee meetings and other employee events.

Ensure development and implementation of internal communications plans in support of Enbridge’s strategic objectives.

Collaborate with Human Resources to develop and execute strategic plans that will enhance Enbridge’s reputation and support objectives related to hiring and retention. Help build employee engagement and design tools to help employees understand the company’s business and direction so they are more productive in their jobs.

Collaborate with IT on using technology to maintain and improve internal communication effectiveness across Enbridge.

Plan, develop and manage a suite of internal communication tools, including face-to-face, print, email, intranet and video. Seek out improvements and best practices to improve on the tools and add to them. Set standards for the use of these tools.

Share the standards, guidelines and best practices related to internal communication with business units to simplify their planning and encourage them to provide consistent internal communication across Enbridge.

Strategic management of direction and branding of elink (Intranet):

Provide overall strategic direction, governance and communications' counsel relating to elink.

Review reporting and measurement of the elink key performance indicators to ensure they are meeting internal communications objectives.

Team engagement and development:

Lead the Internal communications team, including coaching and mentoring, to build a cohesive departmental team who will work together and across business unit boundaries and ownership.

Exemplify and actively foster an environment of teamwork and cooperation within immediate team and across the enterprise Communications function.

General accountabilities:

Provide support to corporate executive and senior management related to Enbridge internal communications, including  developing plans, organizing employee meetings, developing presentations, as well as writing internal speeches, articles, and announcements that are high level and strategic.

Develop internal communication standards, templates, pilot projects, etc. that can be used by business units to make it easy for them be consistent across Enbridge. Use influencing skills to increase the likelihood of consistent practices being used across the organization.

Ensure a good balance of internal communication approaches and tools are available that allow for interaction, information sharing and discussion.

Research and stay current on emerging trends and best practices related to internal communications. Seek out opportunities to help Enbridge use internal communication approaches and tools that will maximize reach and make the best use of budget dollars.

Crisis communications:

Participate on corporate crisis communications team. Provide communications assistance/co-ordination in a crisis to ensure communications in a crisis are timely and accurate to key internal audiences, to maintain/sustain corporate reputation.


A university degree and/or related experience in journalism or public relations.

Ideally accreditation by CPRS, PRSA or IABC.

Ten to fourteen years of progressively responsible experience in internal communications.

Solid understanding of internal communication best practices and connection to peers in other organizations to research and apply changes in evolving internal approaches and tactics.

Strong communications skills and knowledge, and detailed understanding of communication theory and its application in the effective integration of corporate messages.

Strong leadership skills in leading a team of professional communication advisors

Strong management skills, including strategic planning, financial planning and project management.

Sharp analytical skills to quickly analyze complex situations, determine key issues and messages, and implement the programs.

Strong interpersonal skills, including consultation, influencing, negotiation, facilitation and conflict resolution.

Able to manage multiple projects at once, under constant deadline pressure.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
